Knee pain is one of the most common problems faced by senior citizens and daily working people alike. The knee joint has a knee cap that cushions any sudden blows to the knee joint in case of a fall. Also, when we walk, the knee joints tend to face the friction and that damages the joint over ages. Generally, pain in knees is associated with arthritis. Arthritis simply means inflammation of joints. 1. Cartilage Tears: Cartilage is a tough yet flexible tissue that covers the bone ends. The cartilage in knee comprises the menisci on either side of the joint and thereby ensures more flexibility. A tear in this cartilage is called meniscus tear in medical terms. This tear is a common kind of injury. When you have a fall during which excess weight is applied on one knee, the cartilage is bound to tear. Such tears can cause acute knee pain problems which can worsen with time if left unattended. In most cases, it requires surgery to mend these tears.

2. Rheumatoid Knee Arthritis: This is a kind of a disorder involving the tissue around the knee joint. The tissue becomes irregularly inflamed and thickened. This chronic inflammation leads to the damage to the cartilage. Sometimes, this can lead to a complete loss of cartilage. This is one of the severe types of arthritis and can permanently damage the knee if not treated at early stages. Out of all the arthritis cases, 15% is rheumatoid arthritis.

3. Knee Osteoarthritis: This is one of the most common types of arthritis. This is found commonly in old people and is caused due to the continuous and progressive wearing of the knee cartilage between the joint. Mostly a problem occurring after the age of 50. With the wearing out of the knee cartilage, the range of motion of the knee joint gets limited. Other than that, the stiffness of the knee, swelling of the joint, deformity, tenderness and acute pain is caused. Osteoarthritis is governed by several factors like age, genes, previous injuries and illnesses, weight, etc. Overweight people are more likely to suffer from this problem as the knees are under more pressure.

4. Post Traumatic Knee Pain: This kind of knee pain is a result of a knee injury like a ligament tear or a bone fracture. The knee is a fragile joint and if there is a severe injury which is not given proper attention, it can escalate and become a chronic knee pain problem. If not tended to, the cartilage can get damaged over time and lead to stiffness and swelling.

All these common causes of knee pain can be avoided with proper care. Also, once the cause is figured out, treating knee pain becomes extremely easy.

• They are responsible for sharing the information pertaining to patient’s case history and progress with other health care experts for further investigation

• Getting trained on modern techniques and technologies for treating their patients

• Organizing students and junior physiotherapists as supporting workers for their help

• Being accountable for answering various queries of the patient parties

• They have to be sympathetic, caring and professional at all times

• They must know how to deal with the clinical risk
