The 7 Traits of successful elegance

Here are my top 7 tips and traits for a lady aspiring to be a woman of elegance.

1. Kindness – caring, compassionate, loving and considerate

A kind person shows concur for the feelings of others and is helpful and generous. A kind person does good deeds without expecting rewards for doing so. It is a fundamental aspect of manifesting careens and can be the ability to place the needs of others before your own, to be completely selfless and full of empathy.

“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see”

Mark Twain

Kindness is a character strength and a lot of people in this world classify it as ‘good character’. To me,it is number one. You are always going to have unkind people in this world, but we can’t change that, but we CAN change it by being kind. In some situations, where someone is unkind to you and your approach is to be kind back – to me, that is what a woman of strength is, and having that virtue of humanity can change your world.

You can practise or express kindness through doing charity work, or just going home and loving your family is enough.

“Kindness consists of doing favours and good deeds for others without the expectation of personal gain. This strength requires respect for others but also includes emotional affection. Kind people find joy in the act of giving and helping other people, regardless of their degree of relatedness or similarity.”

Tayyab Rashid

According to studies, it creates a significant increase in life satisfaction. Another study also found that participants felt happier spending money on others rather than themselves.

Happiness can be increased through the practice of kindness.

“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness” Dalai Lama

Here are some ways to practice kindness:

– Buy a small gift randomly for someone
– Make a card for a friend
– Talk to someone who is shy
– Set up a coffee date with an old girlfriend
– Donate your unneeded possessions
– Talk with a neighbour
– Smile at people passing by

2. Cautiousness

Now you are probably wondering why I put this down as a trait. I put this second as it is a trait that a lot of women aren’t really aware of. There can be so many situations where you can put this into practice. In relationships, particularly when someone uses you for their own gain – you need to be watchful and mindful of these kind of people, and carry on in circumspection.

Another great words to describe this trait is to be ‘vigilant’. These two words are found in the bible in Psalms a lot, particularly when King David talks about his enemies.

3. Self – Respect

As they say, “Elegant ladies are hard to come by.” If you are a young girl looking for information on how to be an elegant lady or like a lady in Downton Abbey, you will come to realise that they have a lot of self-love and del-respect for themselves. The way they carry themselves is with two things:

grace and poise

as they always say!

And how they dress definitely reflects their character. Self-care is of the utmost importance and self-respect and self-care co-exist. It is by development of self-understanding and self-awareness. Through the way they speak, address people, talk, what they are capable of, and holding a lot of self-confidence.

it is all about being aware and confident of who you are.

Through self-awareness you are attuned to your feelings, emotional responses, and listening to the tone of your inner voice. I also did a post on “Staying true to yourself” and it is not easy to do that if you really don’t know who you are, perceptively. To perceive is to be aware, and someone who is perceptive is considered aware, intelligent and insightful.

Huffington Post states on “the 10 Understated Qualities of a truly beautiful woman” that “when your are self-loving you naturally possess a quiet confidence. Your self-awareness, dedication to self-development and personal growth provide you the knowledge to succeed nearly at anything you seek”

4. Treat yourself first-class

An elegant striving lady always treats herself first-class; she is comfortable in her own skin and with her self.

Sometimes we feel less than a lady if we don’t treat ourselves as number 1! You have to think of yourself as FIRST CLASS even if you are in the middle/low classes of society. Society brands certain ladies to be who they WANT to be first-class. We can be bigoted about it and often we forget to use our strongest trait to be kind to ourselves.

5. Use what you’ve got

Wearing a $1000 Buberry coat, and $500 pairs of Vivienne Westwood shoes doesn’t have to be everyones signature and yes, I love delving into high-end luxury brands but at the end of the day, that doesn’t make you elegant. I believe elegance is definitely an inner beauty. It is the way you interact with people and the demeanour you carry that makes you truly elegant. You don’t have to look a MILLION dollars either, although that would be nice! You are probably thinking, why should I take advice from someone who uses the word “exquisite” for their blog, and they’re saying this!!?? but that’s just something I aspire to, and it is not the actual definition of my name. I hope you understand where I am coming from.

6. She uses proper etiquette

In my recent post “How to have proper etiquette” I hone in on the 19th century background but if that doesn’t interest you, it’s fine! In the modern world, it still applies today.

Proper etiquette never goes out of fashion, and knowing the basics, it shows an air or possession of elegance. Over the years, we forget the general rules of etiquette – it can be a “younger generation” thing or maybe you weren’t taught at home, or in your upbringing. It is important to understand it’s meaning and what perceptions you have.

7. A BIG heart

To some, this may seem the most important. I think this can co-exist with kindness because without a big heart ,there is none!

She is someone who doesn’t like to meddle in major gossip and is not petty or catty towards anyone! She is someone who is aware of her thoughts, moods, actions and she puts in a lot of effort when it comes to relationships/friendships.

I love what Kathleen Cheung said at the University of Toronto.

“She’s introspective and she puts in the effort to understand herself on a deeper level so she doesn’t let “what others think” or “what others do” to direct her decision in life.”

She is open-minded, honest, and most of all, believes in herself, and allows things to be, instead of meddling in other peoples affairs. It takes a big heart to help shape other peoples lives and your own. So, don’t forget to have an open heart towards people, even when you have been heart broken in the past or something major has changed the course of your life path.

I suggest you go through each trait thoroughly and write notes if you like. You can use the information for your own benefit, and I highly praise you for reading till the end because it is not EVERy girls ambition to have these kind of character traits and I admire you for wanting to read something of this calibre, with this title, to further develop yourself as a woman and “A Lady of Quality

My “Grown Up” Christmas List

Generally, every girl has a ‘wish list’ when it comes to Christmas. My current one is expanding, and I have been online more than I ever have been in my life!!! Even if it’s not on budget, I still am tempted to just browse, and add to a “WISH” list in my MS Word, so that I can refer to it when I am at home.

According to “The Age”, Australia is to spend 8.8 billion on Christmas presents this year!! With more than half of it spending on credit/store cards. I couldn’t believe the statistics! Now, that is why I got rid of my credit card. Been there, done that! I had one when I was in Melbourne and it was so easy to spend on things whenever you want, however you want. This year I decided not to go down that road, and try and save as much as I can to do the things I love and want in 2017, so I can pursue and follow my dreams.

So, here is my ‘grown up christmas list’ that will probably be on my list for the next year too!

Best Book Investment

A couple of days ago I took a trip to Northam – a city much bigger than Merredin! and it had a few shops that I absolutely LOVED! One in particular was Everlastings on Fitzgerald where they had pretty things on display everywhere!!

From candles to vintage bags to vintage everything! I was oohing and aahing everywhere I looked! I walked over to a white bookcase where there were some beauty products on display, and I tried some “MOR” products on the skin, and it smelt gorgeous….

Sometimes I don’t particularly like the product, but what they had there I really liked! Everything was packaged beautifully, and the room was just exquisitely exhibited. I definitely recommend this shop, if you are out and about in the country of Western Australia.

After I looked at the MOR products, I walked on over to the counter, and there was a small white round table with a “high tea glasshouse style” which was a limited edition collection of candles, and right next to it was the one and only, Lisa Messenger book, Life & Love. I have seen this everywhere, and the idea of reading a book on creating your dreams was enough for me, but then I noticed – ‘Love, Style, Life’ by Garance Dore’.

garance-dore-book-signing-93863

I had seen this picture EVERYWHERE on Instagram, and I wanted to know what the fuss was about!!! Even more, the three stages is exactly what a female goes through constantly! We all want to be loved and ‘love’ is bound in a relationship, and ‘style’ is something that is of our particular taste, and well, ‘LIFE’ is self-explanatory.

This is the kind of book where you can skip parts and go straight to your favourite topic. Such as “Elegance”, that is the first part I skip to right away because I know that that is the topic that I want to achieve greatly in all of my blogs.

What stood out to me was the following sentence:

Elegance is….. eloquence. Knowing how to speak – The secret? Reading and practicing.

Eloquence is the practice or art of using language with fluence or aptness. Aptness is a great word! Aptness is when you are able to learn quickly, efficiently and easily. Those that are apt are refined in intelligence!

ELEGANCE - CHANEL

When you say about an author that is ‘eloquent’, it usually means to speak or write at ease in using language to best effect. Such as Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte. If you wish to be eloquent in speech and language, it is best to read those authors books. I am still working on it, and there are plenty of words I don’t know! But learning to be eloquent in character is something that I always will want to learn!

LOVE STYLE LIFE PIC

I may be reiterating but elegance and eloquence is something that I want as a lady!! I don’t know about you, but I am on a journey to further my language skills and character to be the best I can be as a lady.

Material on the subject is in my “How to be a lady” post, but if you don’t want to keep buying books, then google! I am sure google will find you blogs, and articles that teach you all sort of different ways to uphold yourself in grace, sophistication and poise. I am still trudging through Jane Eyre, as I started reading another book – I have put it aside, but there is something about this book that I believe will help with my English Language. English Language was actually my best subject in high school, along with Music Performance! One that really stood out to me is Shirley by Charlotte Bronte. I eventually want to get through this THICK novel, and gain knowledge through study and experience!

LADY WITH CLASS

It has been quite an odyssey getting through my Library studies course, I have posted quite a few things in the discussion postings, and the lecturer has given quite positive feedback which has kept me proud. This I will continue to do until I figure out what my next move is! Library Studies was my first love when I graduated high school in 2004, and I can see myself in a library in the future, but sometimes you get that gut feeling like there may be more for you out there!

I need to read my own post on “Dare to Dream” to keep me thinking about the dreams that I wanted to achieve! There was just so much that I wanted to achieve as a lady, and maybe landing a dream job is what I need…. But I shall keep on with my studies and see what life shall entail this year.

Elegance is …..also…… giving attention to others. Have you ever met someone and they just make you feel special. When I met a particular girl in Melbourne, the first question she said to me in the car was “Are you royal?” WHO asks that!!!??? Hahaha and what a compliment of a question that is! I established a really good relationship with this girl, and I will never forget when she asked me that question!!!! What was more interesting was that later on I found out about my ancestry, and they DID host parties for the Prince and Princess of Wales in the 1800’s!!! So, it was close! For further information on my ancestry you can explore in my blog, Travels in Australia.

Having qualities of love, style and life is the best thing you can have. You are on your way to success if you have these things in your life, I believe!

LOVE STYLE LIFE

So, I reckon…. I don’t know if the word ‘reckon’ sounds eloquent enough! Haha! But I consider the book, Love, Style, Life is a sound investment to speculate life in itself. It is full of theory, and she is a blogger too!!! That’s what I love about her. She is a photographer, illustrator and author and has published and contributed articles for British Vogue, Paris Vogue, The Wall Street journal, The New York Times, T Magazine, Elle, Guardian and New York magazine, and she lives in New York too!!! What a dream!!!

If you have read this till the end, then I would say that this is the book for you! It has helpful tips on beauty and it has everything you need in one little package! It is every girls guide to LOVE, STYLE AND LIFE!!!!!

How to be a lady

Classic Lady Wide Desktop Background

As I have said before in my “About” page, I have done an elegance course in Etiquette, & Self-Manner. It is important for most women to learn how to conduct themselves in a graceful manner and obtain qualities of self-assurance, and self-confidence. I recently bought two books that have helped me gain confidence no matter what the situation is. If you would like to buy material on being a lady I recommend “A guide to Elegance” by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux, and “How to be a lady” by Candace Simpson-Giles. They are my “go-to” and “how-to” books on living with an elegant style. Information on elegance is endless, but sometimes you have to pay to do a course and the information I can give is totally free. I have written down notes from the course that I did, and the books I have listed are also on my Instagram page. The purpose of an etiquette course is to teach young women to conduct themselves in dignity, character and poise. I even learnt this from watching a “Barbie” movie!!!

I am going to start with the “Mindset of a lady”

Firstly, I would like to say that “a woman becomes a lady through training, self-awareness, and a lot of love”.

The beauty of becoming a lady is a timeless thing. Much is to be learnt, and when it comes to training I think the best thing to do is look up on elocution tutorials on YouTube. I came across quite a few lessons, and they teach you how to speak well, and how to present yourself in a proper way. A great film to watch is “My fair Lady” with Audrey Hepburn. It is amazing to see the change in presentation and speech so dramatically.

AUDREY HEPBURN

A lady is someone who has found the true essence of what it is to be a woman. My favourite website is http://www.elegantwoman.org. There are HEAPS of articles on elegance, how to be lovely, etc and they have the right information you need. They also do courses, if that’s what you want to do.

Your opinions and experiences affect all that you do. How you accept life comes across in your attitude, and the mind of a lady will show.

Consider this, a lady embraces the truth of WHO she is and lives her life with strength and conviction in the knowledge that a lady is a magnificent being of charm, beauty and class.

A lady defines what is sensitive, delicate, kind, beautiful and cultured.

CLASSIC LADY 2

Being in tune with beauty does not mean being weak and ineffectual. True beauty comes from within, and what’s in your heart will always show to others.

Just as a diamond reflects such sparkle and beauty, yet is one of the hardest stones, equally a lady can exude feminine beauty whilst remaining strong. The best and my most favourite TV show that exemplifies “ladies” is the much loved series, Downton Abbey. Watch this, as it will help you talk like a lady.

Downton-Abbey-6_gl_2feb12_b_426x639

The way that a lady thinks and feels about herself is crucial. It always comes across in conversation, and I have understood this from experience. If you have a positive attitude and mindset, it will radiate and come across in your personality, and people LOVE that!!!! Read books by Georgette Heyer, Julie Klassen or Stephanie Laurens. It will help you widen your vocabulary.

Your love and care for yourself radiates outwards to all those that you come into contact with.

“Know yourself, and love yourself” are indeed important mantras for every lady.

Ask yourself:

Why do you WANT to be a lady?

Have you ever felt less than a lady?

Also, what aspects of being a lady are important to you?

If you want to do a course, I recommend Etiquette and Co, They do a two day refinement package, and I am pretty sure they are held in Sydney. If you live in Melbourne, go to Tanya Powell Modelling Agency. They are great, and such friendly people.

TANYA POWELL

Also, Go to How to be a classy lady article to improve yourself in personal grooming and dressing well. It has great highlights on improving posture, hygiene and dressing elegantly.

One book I have is “How to be lovely“. It has quotes by Audrey Hepburn, and is a great light read. Add this to your “elegant book collection”, and you will be well on your way to being a loveable woman admired by most people you meet!!

COATS

Duchess-JojoMamanBebe-Coat

One of the most BIGGEST fashion icons, is my favourite role model and royal member, Kate Middleton. I have been following her since late 2013, and I post photos of her on my Instagram. She is an absolute doll, and an amazing, highly sophisticated lady. Otherwise known as The Duchess of Cambridge she is a beacon of modern femininity.

She is always dressed fashionably, and holds herself in a timeless, style-consciousness way. She is one of my role-models, and I love to replicate her look.

For everything on how to replicate Kate Middleton’s style go to Kate Middletons Style. It has basically every event mentioned that she has been to, and where to buy similar clothes to what she wears. It has become one of my favourite websites!!

My favourite piece that I have come across is the JoJo Maman Bebe Princess Line Coat. It is a very fitted coat, nice big buttons down the front, and I love the fact that it is round necked which gives it a very chic look. Kate wore it when she visited the set of Downton Abbey, the much loved TV series set at Highclere Castle. I think a coat like this is a MUST HAVE!!! It is simple, yet elegant.

JoJo-Maman-Bebe-Princess-Line

To buy visit http://www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk

It is absolutely timeless, and is on my “to buy” list. With Kate’s choice of clothing, she shows us how choosing simple pieces can make such a strong statement, but yet look so simple at the same time.

You could probably finish off the look with some L.K. Bennett Sledge round toe platform shoes found on the House of Fraser website. They are $195 POUNDS. These are worn by many popular Hollywood women. It has an almond toe, and are a GLOSSY leather. Stunning heels for a night out!! and I am sure most girls will swoon over them!

NUDE SHOES

Another preference of mine is the Hobbs Persephone Trench Coat. It is a pine green Trench coat. Kate wore it for St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The brand Hobbs say the coat provides a ‘sleek, clean silhouette’ with ‘plenty of contemporary cool’. It has double breasted buttons which is what I like most on a coat. It is approximately $320 Australian dollars, and is found on https://www.hobbs.co.uk. Click here for a lengthy review on Kate’s coats.

Hobbs-Persephone-Trench-Coat

When Kate stepped out in London in a Pink Mulberry coat to do three engagements, she stepped out in style. It is a bold fuchsia colour, and can be found on the Mulberry website. If you are looking for a coat that is not too expensive, I would try the Sammy Dress website. From hooded coats to jackets, check out the Stylish Hooded Neck Solid Color Batwing Sleeves Loose-Fitting Cashmere Coat For Women. It is only $18.20.

For something more stylish buy the Vintage Style Scoop Neck Sleeveless Slant Cut Three Buttons Woolen Blend Cloak For Women. It is wool, and very vintage and is only $17.56 with a scoop neck.

COAT

I find that the best website to buy coats is ASOS. It’s not too cheap and not too pricey. If you LOVE fur, then I would recommend the Story Of Lola Longline Teddy Bear Faux Fur Coat. It is $185.20, and comes with FREE SHIPPING!!! It only comes in cream, which is a favourite colour of mine. It is lined, and has side pockets and is also double breasted.

Another item of clothing that I absolutely ADORE is the Mendes Dress. It is a maroon red colour, and is totally in season at the moment with HOBBS. It is such a feminine dress, and screams elegant!! It is the perfect dress for a formal dinner, and it will make you look like “royalty”!! and I’m sure most girls will want this dress, if it makes you look like a princess!!! red lippy, you will be well on your way to looking glam. It is a very flattering dress.

RED DRESS

If you want to look like Kate, this dress screams royalty with the particular maroon colour.
